Great Advertisement

I saw this ad on a social network site and it really caught my attention because of the kid jumping into the nice calm blue pool and it is an ad for tsunami watch. It may be a little offensive if you see it that way but to me it is just a way to get people's attention. Humor really catches my eye because it makes me smile and like the product, whatever it may be.

Art Nouveau Style

This poster is one that was in my Aunt's house right above her staircase. It is definitely an Art Nouveau style poster. You can tell it is such by the detail of the hair, the font style and also that is is French. I don't actually know what the poster is actually saying but by looking at it, I believe it has something to do with being a pet owner and loving animals. (Which my Aunt is... She has 9 cats.). The function of this poster is to be decorative, and stand out amongst others. The pink shirt really gives the image a pop due to the other surrounding colors.

Nature's Power Plant

I came across this advertisement in a magazine that I was using for a collage. It immediately caught my eye because of the avocados serving as the blades on a windmill. This is great use of photoshop and the purpose of this image is to make you realize that the avocado is healthy and that it is "nature's power plant. The plain white background really makes the images stand out more because there is nothing else to look at in the image besides the avocados. Then at the bottom of the image it describes why the avocado is healthy and why it is an important fruit.

Psychedelic Ad

I found this ad made by Victor Moscosso in the "A Century of Graphic Design" book. I liked it because of the use of complementary colors that it used which is a theme of psychedelic art. The function is to make you stare at it for a long time and try and determine what the words/picture depicts.

Surrealist Advertisement

I found this advertisement for a pen in the magazine Paul gave me for my previous blog. It caught my eye big time because of the cool image of the woman's face wrapped around the pen as well as the beautiful background. It seemed like a very surrealist style ad. The function is to show the beauty that the pen can create and the precision/freedom you have whilst using it.

Busey bank is clever

I saw this Busey Bank sign yesterday and came to a realization that their logo is really clever. They use a pillar in the B of Busey. I didn't really see this as anything before this graphic design class but now my eyes have been opened. The funtion of the pillar in the B is to show off the pillar checking and pillar club that they have at Busey. It also seems to have a contemporary feel to it because of the simplicity and the conceptual imagery.

Red Handed

This week I chose to use the cover of a magazine I have at my house. (yes, murder intrigues me) But I chose this cover because I like the layout of it. You are immediately drawn to the big red hand image behind the title, which if there was no title, you could probably assume this magazines theme has something to do with murder. The solid black background really makes the hand and the title pop. The function of this cover is to simply tell you the theme of the magazine and by using the pictures at the bottom, you get a sense of what/who you will see in the articles. The function of the red hand is to show a sense of crime and blood, which the magazine is full of.

Retro Motel Sign

I saw this motel sign in Urbana. It caught my eye because of its retro style and bright colors. I also chose this sign because it was a very Late Modern style sign and we just talked about this style. The function of this sign to be very bright, vibrant and scream at people that they should stay at the Courtesy Motel in Urbana, Illinois. The use of the blue and yellow stripes make your eyes shift the the word MOTEL.

Great Golden Grate

I sort of went the other way with this blog and decided to use a sports logo that is on one of my hats. This is a good work of graphic design because it says what it represents without actually using type in the logo. Even if you don't watch basketball, by looking at this logo you can tell that, A. it is a basketball team, B. that they are from California, (Golden Gate Bridge), and C. the teams color scheme. The logo itself is made beautifully. Your eye instantly gets drawn to the bridge because of the color and placement, then the lines behind it representing the lines on a basketball fit nicely since the overall shape is a circle. It looks nice because the lines get cut off when it reaches the bridge, making it seem that the main point is the bridge. the function of this logo is for the person to look at it  for less than a second and realize what it is representing.

Punny Comedy Club

Displaying IMG_1090.JPG

I found this advertisement for a comedy club in Chicago in a CMYK magazine from 2005. It caught my eye because it had a funny anti-joke on it. That is clever since the main idea of the magazine is about a comedy event. It uses very simple font and a black background with the sign to the club underneath it. It is a simple design but it is effective. The function of the ad is to make you laugh and be interested in coming to the Zanes Comedy Club.

PRINT Advertisement

I saw this advertisement in a PRINT magazine. (October 2012). It really caught my eye because of the number of different images and also the green and yellow really popped off of the page. At first I didn't know what the function was, but after looking for a couple seconds I found it was an advertisement for an art and design conference in San Francisco. The function is to make you focus on the strip where the information is as well as showing a number of motifs and logos.

Coca Cola Sign

For my blog this week I decided to use this old Coca-Cola bottle cap that I found in my garage. I love this because it is an enlarged bottle cap and it has a checker pattern in the center behind the words "Coca-Cola". I believe that the purpose of the checker pattern is to draw someone's eyes to the piece. Like if it was hung up at a restaurant, It would catch people's eyes because of the sudden change of pattern and how light would make it glow in a darker setting. I think it is really cool and different because it is graphic design on a big bottle cap.

Psychedelic Poster

I found this poster in a vintage store downtown. It caught my eye because it looks like an old anti-smoking ad from possibly the 70's. I'ts abstract design and popping colors made it really stand out in the store. The graphic style was the psychedelic style. It uses nice soft colors to make the reader feel comfortable and accept the ad.
